World Vegetarian Day

vegHappy World Vegetarian Day JCF Campers! World Vegetarian Day, held annually on October 1, was created to kick-off Vegetarian Awareness Month and highlight the various reasons for choosing a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. According to the American Dietetic Association, “appropriately planned” vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.  

But whether it’s for the animals, the earth, or personal health, everyone can enjoy some of the physical and mental health benefits of vegetarian dining – even if it’s just one day a week through initiatives like “Meatless Monday.”

Here at JCF, we support our campers wide variety of eating habits – whether vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians, or veggie-lovin’ meat eaters – as long as those habits are healthy! Approximately 20 percent of your daily food intake should be protein, which can easily be achieved on a vegetarian diet (check out the meal plan that follows for an example.)

“Celebrate” today and throughout this month by trying a meatless recipe, finding out more about the vegetarian lifestyle, hosting a meatless meal or potluck with friends, or resolving to eat meatless meals on a regular basis.

 

SAMPLE VEGETARIAN MENU

Breakfast

Fruit smoothie (blueberries, raspberries, 1/2 banana, plain almond 

milk, ice, tsp agave, and blend)

Lunch

Black bean burger w/lettuce “bun”; side salad and/or baked sweet potato

Snack 

1 cup of edamame and 1/2 avocado w/paprika OR apple w/tsp of nut butter

Dinner

House salad w/tofu and homemade vinaigrette dressing.
