As most of us know, fitness fads come and go. However, boot camps has been around for quite some time (all of 12-15 years of it haha) and are still among the most popular classes.
What is boot camp?
Boot camp is a group training workout that includes an intense array of cardiovascular and strength elements with very little rest in between exercises/activities. In doing so, you burn fat faster and tone & firm muscles while getting a good cardiovascular workout as well.
What are the benefits of boot camp?
The goal of boot camp is to provide a full-body workout that builds strength, tone muscles, improves cardiovascular capacity, and attain the desired body composition. More benefits of boot camp are listed below:
- offer more challenging and varied workouts
- not a lot of equipment needed
- create a sense of camaraderie among participants
Does boot camp deliver results?
According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), a team of exercise scientists from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse Exercise & Health program led a study to analyze the health and fitness benefits of boot camp-style workouts. According to ACE, the researchers found that the average exerciser burns 9.8 calories per minute, up to 600 calories for an hour.
The bottom line…
Boot camp is a great way to enhance cardiovascular capacity, increase strength & muscle tone, and help control weight. Also, the varied workouts means less boredom, subsequently, increasing adherence to the program. But remember, all boot camps (boot camp-styled workouts) are not created equal. Some focus more on cardiovascular while others focus more on strength training so be sure to do your homework and find out if the program coincides with your fitness goals. Here at JCF, we focus on the five pillars of optimum fitness – cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength & endurance, flexibility, and body composition, ultimately giving you the balance you need to move toward your fitness and health goals.
